Notation: Dashboard Notes for Jira

Rich text notes on any Jira dashboard that stay saved.

Notation is a dashboard gadget for rich text notes: team context, links, standing instructions, and whatever the charts around it cannot explain. It edits in place, saves explicitly, and verifies the write before reporting success.

Getting started

  1. Open a Jira dashboard and select Edit.
  2. Choose Add gadget and add Notation: Notes.
  3. Select Write a note, type, and save.

Editing

There is no separate configuration screen. Click into the note and write. The toolbar covers headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, text and background color, ordered, bulleted and checklists, quotes, code, links and images. Ctrl+S saves.

Saving

Content is stored per gadget in Atlassian Forge hosted storage and written only when you save. After writing, the app reads the content back to confirm the save landed before reporting success. Refreshing the dashboard does not reset it.

Permissions

Editing is gated by the dashboard's own write permission: people who can edit the dashboard can edit the note, and everyone else sees it read only.

Appearance

Each note can carry its own background color, text color and size, and the gadget follows your Jira theme including dark mode. Links open in a real browser tab rather than inside the gadget frame.

Limits

Notes are capped at 200 KB each, and content is sanitised when rendered.

Permissions and data

Notation stores note content in Atlassian Forge hosted storage and reads Jira work only as needed to render the gadget. The app declares zero external network egress.
